In efforts to encourage summer reading and ensure children are being fed, 11 libraries in Washington, D.C. are serving up free meals, an initiative started in collaboration between D.C. Public Libraries, D.C. Hunger Solutions, and the Office of State Superintendent of Education. Other areas throughout the country are also making efforts to provide children, particularly the needy, meals during the summer months.
